‘FAMILY CIRCUS’ CREATOR

BIL KEANE

William Aloysius Keane, better known as Bil Keane,
was an American cartoonist.
He is most notable for his work on the long-running newspaper comic
The Family Circus
Keane started drawing the one-panel cartoon featuring
Billy, Jeffy, Dolly, P.J. and their parents in 1960
and it continues in syndication to this day.
His comic strip is featured in nearly 1,500 newspapers across the country.

Bil Keane’s “Family Circus” comics entertained readers
with a simple but sublime mix of humor and traditional family values
for more than a half century. The appeal endured, the author thought,

They recorded the cast album Oct.18-&-19,
they opened that thursday,
and I went for opening saturday nite, the 24th !


AMAZING THAT BROADWAY SHOWS,
considered expensive,
could be seen (in great seats) for $5.40 !!!
(did you notice the ‘54′?)

YEP.. GIVEN ONE TARDIS TRIP…

I’d use it for Susan Luckey !

I’m still sorta ’smitten’…

Even though she broke my heart
(my autograph request is, so far, ignored),
I did kinda send the request to her HOME !
Not wanting to appear scary or creepy,
but it was my ONLY option !
(I was polite, almost reverant, in my letter)

A shame for me since in the last few months
I’ve become quite the expert on her life story.
There were only ‘obscure’ bread-crumbs on the internet.
It was left to me to put the ’story’ together !

THE GAME WAS A-FOOT !!!

(actually very enjoy-able when successful)



I’ve been able to ‘piece-together’ the years,
and able to follow her thru the decades.
Susan did okay for herself…
peaked a little early, but a life of fullfillment to this day.

IT WAS A FUN (difficult) SEARCH
ending with glee on my birthday when her
home address was FINALLY discovered by me.
It was a happy accident.  I was ‘giddy’ !
(one letter, no more, I won’t invade her privacy again)

THE ARRIVAL OF THE MAIL FOR THE NEXT MONTH
WAS VERY DISAPPOINTING FOR ME…
BUT I’M GETTING OVER IT (slowly) !

Knowing that my mail got to her hand
before it ended up in the garbage,
is still a thrill for me !
My thing is never to ‘intrude’ & know ‘YOU’…
it’s to have ‘YOU’ know that I exist somewhere !
(like with RON & FEZ)
The slightest of ‘connection’ is all you can
really hope for in the life of a celebrity.

THE AUTOGRAPHY WOULD HAVE BEEN SPECTACULAR,
but even without, I’m feeling I hit a ‘high’ note !

(my investigation, the letter arriving, the letter not being
returned to me or refused, read, disposed of..etc)

A co-worker brought me a small stone
back from ROME, ITALY… from the FORUM !
(NICE.. not the first one from him)

I was telling him how I mounted the stone
on a ‘card’ and displayed it…
then told him the story of my friend in BRASIL,
who sent me stones from a national park,
along with cool photos of where they came from…

NOT 2 MINUTES LATER…

A package was brought to me
that needed a signature…
IT WAS FROM MY FRIEND IN BRASIL !!!
They had a mail strike and it was a very late
birthday gift that I had no idea was arriving !

THE WOMAN FROM BRASIL BEFORE,

the day I DO ?

Driving home from work,
a young girl driving a VW Beetle
has to brake quickly after she sees traffic
at the STOP SIGN she’s very close to ‘running’ !
SHE’S A LEAD-FOOT !
The ‘beetle’ was very light blue, almost white…
(no damage, scratches I can’t see)
When I get home, I ask my daughter the color
of the ‘beetle’ that hit her the other day ?
(very distinctive, unique color)

OUT OF ALL THE CARS ON THE ROAD,
AND ALL THE GIN JOINTS…
I ‘FOUND’ THE LEAD-FOOT THAT HIT MY KID
WITHOUT KNOWING ANYTHING BUT MAKE OF CAR !
(and not anywhere near my neighborhood)

THIS GIRL IS GOING TO HAVE
A FEW MORE ACCIDENTS BEFORE SHE LEARNS !
(if she learns)
I hear they ‘add time’ for accidents & tickets,
so that you’re regular license is delayed…
and you get extra time on your new driver provisional.

(sooz signaled a right into a gas station from
the right lane on a one-lane road…
the ‘perp’ tried to pass her on the right,
hitting the passenger side door)

As one of my ‘constant’

very odd ‘coincidences’…

At the start of my Susan Luckey ‘crusade’,
I ‘accidentally’ saw & recorded her on a
non-credited (on the imdb.. I took care of the listing)
appearance on the Burns & Allen Show.



I took the slow-speed VHS tape,
moved it to DVD, and was NOT able
to screen-cap her gorgeous self !

(none of my tricks worked, it was going to be software)

My kid (owner of iSupportU.biz in Boulder, Co)
suggested some open-source freeware media player,

VLC Media Player

It’s pretty impressive,

elegant, versatile, dare I say, DELUXE !
(and it screen-capped DVD’s with ease)

I’ll probably not use any other ‘player’
for ANY DVD viewing… I’m spoiled !

It’ll play anything, even incomplete files !



They had some complicated screen cap instructions listed
for some alternate reason that i didn’t care about..
I looked further and found that all you had to do was hit

SHIFT – S     and it saved the pic to MY DOC. MY PICS.
(.png files easily converted to whatever)

Easy-Peazy…

The only problem I had was when
it made itself the default player…
I still rathered windows media player
for some of my daily editing nonsense…
I had to google the instructions
to the control panel to reset it back…
(not a big deal, but I’d never have done without)

I would have left VLC as default… but it was FULL screen
and I couldn’t get it to shrink to use-able size
for access to other folders and files on the same screen.
I found it awkward.
(other users complained they couldn’t get it to ‘maximize’)

Googling the simple fix?
Forget it, Instructions involved changing code…

So by putting all 5 of Susan’s screen-caps in this issue,

(it takes a few weeks sometimes, but they get there)

THIS TIME TRAVEL IS PRETTY HARD ON ME !
(even with doing it in my ‘dreams’)

I was blaming TIME TRAVEL for my ‘deteriorating’ health
in the month or 2 before the blood clots
sent me to the hospital for a week…
(as it came on gradually)
and that VERY restful recuperation at home for a month !

Sounding like I lost my mind ?

NAH !  Just my mind ‘wandering…

(I have a VERY active imagination)

((or it STILL COULD BE the drugs))

But… I’m back ‘in time’ for Thanksgiving !

Probably my favorite meal of the year !
(that’s why I try to have the same one on
EVERY holiday or family get-together)

My mom cooks for an army…
and offers a better menu (and more choices)
than most restaurants !!!
(too bad I’m past able for 2nd’s & 3rd’s & a sandwich later)

Mom does these ‘feasts’
as if it’ll be her last one !

And when that day comes?

I have no idea what to do,
or where to go,
when a holiday occurs !

I’VE NEVER KNOWN ANY OTHER HOLIDAY DESTINATION !

My wife has little family, and they’re in the UK.
So where to go has never been an issue.

WE HAVEN’T HAD TO DIVIDE OUR TIME !
