It’s been nearly 90 degrees
for the first 2 days of fall !!!

I’m ready for the soothing cool
of the coming season…

Speaking of the upcoming season…
RIP Renfield has an anniversary coming up !
Right around my birthday, year 11 is complete,
and we start…

YEAR 12 of RIP Renfield !!!

and they said I wouldn’t last…

(actually they said..”I wish he’d stop)

I’ve fallen in love with NORMA SHEARER just recently.
She made the shift from ’silents’ to ‘talkies’ successfully,
but I wish her ’stage’ flourish was toned down a bit.
In later roles (as she aged) I didn’t see the ’spark’
although she was a master of her art…

BUT… when I saw this pint-sized, but ’stately’, ‘pepper-pot’
as a younger actress going toe-to-toe with CLARK GABLE
in   IDIOT’S DELIGHT… SHE STOLE MY HEART !

Edith Norma Shearer was a Canadian-American actress.
Shearer was one of the most popular actresses in the world from the mid-1920s
until her retirement in 1942. Her early films cast her as the girl-next-door
but after her 1930 film The Divorcee, she played sexually liberated women
in sophisticated contemporary comedies and dramas,
as well as several historical and period films.

Unlike many of her MGM contemporaries,
Shearer’s celebrity declined steeply after retirement.
By the time of her death in 1983, she was largely remembered at best
for her “noble” roles in the regularly-revived The Women, Marie Antoinette,
and Romeo and Juliet and, at worst, as a forgotten star.

Shearer won an Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in The Divorcee,
and a series of highly successful pre-Code films followed,
including Let Us Be Gay (1930), Strangers May Kiss (1931), A Free Soul (1931),
Private Lives (1931) and Riptide (1934). All of these were box-office hits,
placing Shearer in competition with Joan Crawford and Greta Garbo
as MGM’s top actress through the remainder of the decade.

The enforcement of the Production Code in 1934 forced Shearer
to drop her celebrated “free soul” image and move exclusively
into period dramas and “prestige” pictures.
(PRE-CODE SHE WAS SUPER-HOT STUFF !)

Shearer has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6636 Hollywood Blvd.
She is entombed in the Great Mausoleum at Forest Lawn Memorial Park
in Glendale, California, in a crypt marked Norma Shearer Arrouge
(Arrouge was her 2nd husband)
along with her first husband Irving Thalberg.
Her friend Jean Harlow is in the crypt next door.

got a call from some idiot insulted by his wife
comparing her time on FACEBOOK to the time
he dedicates to football watching (same thing?)…

HE WAS ADAMANT THAT FOOTBALL
WAS UNIVERSALLY FOLLOWED BY ALL…
Facebook (and games) were a waste of time,
not an equivalent hobby at all !

But that still leaves 300 MILLION residents of the US

In my humble opinion…

Football (most sports) is put out there to occupy
the minds of people, some of whom, who would otherwise be
more annoying or more criminal than they already are…
IT GIVES THEM THE ILLUSION OF BEING THINKERS
ABOUT THINGS THAT REALLY MATTER !
(sports fill the wired-in need for combat)
((it’s ingrained in us, leftover evolutionary stuff))

OCCUPIED MINDS ?

Like keeping older kids in school instead of
vandalizing or burglarizing the neighborhood
out of boredom while you’re at work or away !

Presidential Legacy…

don’t worry about the history books,
take care of the country,
and let history write itself !

Legacy is too strong a word for what presidents do
in the times that they live, and shortly thereafter.
LEGACY should be something that history decides
well after your time in office (or your death).

BUT…

In the case of Barack Obama ?
(nice guy but not a ball-of-fire)

The best legacy that he can leave us
concerns the way the press reports on the president.
For the last 30 years, it seems the ‘teeth’ of the reports
bite deeper and deeper to the point of interfering
with the leadership we always hope for in a president !

IT’S  GOVERMENT  BY  ‘DAILY’ POPULARITY  POLL !!!
You have to react to negativity immediately !
AND BARELY A DAY GOES BY WITHOUT
A ‘BARREL-FUL’ OF NEGATIVITY FOR PAST PRESIDENTS !

That is.. until .. OBAMA !

He is not being criticized severely like past presidents…
(and it’s not because of the great job he’s doing)
((HE’S HAD PLENTY OF MIS-STEPS))

Rake him over the coals?

You will probably be worried about how some
perceive you… a wit? a thinker? or more probably a racist?

WHY TAKE THE CHANCE ?
(Why stir the pot?  as in religious cartoons)

It will be interesting to see if ‘teeth’ are bared again
once a president of non-color (or a non-female)
is elected to the office !

HOPEFULLY THE OBAMA LEGACY
WILL BE AN OPEN, BUT SUBDUED REPORTING
THAT LEAVES ROOM FOR LEADERSHIP
and make the rabid nasty-ness turn from
‘reality show’ fodder to REAL reporting,
not shocking ‘entertainment’ at any cost !

THIS COULD END UP ‘PUSHING
THE PENDULUM BACK THE OTHER WAY !!!


ANOTHER (negative) LEGACY ?
one never spoken of ?

The LEGACY may be the dis-illusionment of generations
of younger voters. Open-ness & Change ?
Great for campaigning, but ‘old-sters’ know better !
The reality of political promises not kept
is a heart-breaker when your eyes are finally opened !

I was getting the GLADYS GLOVER feeling
from Judy Holliday’s IT SHOULD HAPPEN TO YOU !

Was it an accident that the first guy I approached
was the head guy in charge of the building ?

I talked it over with him…
and we ended up having a good laugh…

He said that a beverage company
(one that rhymes with ‘apple’)
had offered $1 million a year for the space…
for advertising…
but they want a tenant of the building to buy the space.

I think it was a negotiation ploy
so I offered him $700,000 for the space !
(not a penny more)

I left my business card with him…
and he assured me he’d bring up my offer
at the next meeting with the other project big-shots !

I offered to photograph the building
and photo-shop RIP Renfield onto it…
IF HE THOUGHT IT WOULD HELP !

Hey.. I don’t need all 4 sides… I don’t need exclusivity…
but I might have dropped a ‘thou’
for a smaller, but read-able  RIP Renfield
on one side of the building !

(of course, I’d never tell my wife)

I have a bone to pick with them…
(and I’m NOT in a disaster area)

ABOUT A WEEK AGO WE HAD SOME SEVERE WEATHER…
It was determined the next day that 3 tornado’s,
causing much damage, cut a swath thru parts of NYC.

ONE WEEK LATER…

A FEMA team is arriving from Washington
to assess the damage and see if the area
qualifies for emergency aid !

MY QUESTION ?

WHY ISN’T THERE ALWAYS A TEAM,
AT THE READY (on stand-by),
TO GO TO THE ‘PROBABLY’ DISASTER AREAS

IMMEDIATELY !!!

Why did it take a week ?
Why wasn’t someone on the way withing hours ?
WHAT DID WAITING A WEEK ACCOMPLISH ?
HAVEN’T THEY EVER HEARD OF ‘TRIAGE’ ?
(I thought everyone had seen M*A*S*H by now)
Wires are still down, downed trees are still lying around
on houses,cars,properties,roads,etc.

WHY CAN’T THE EMERGENCY PEOPLE
TREAT IT LIKE AN EMERGENCY ?

ISN’T IT THEIR JOB ?
OR ARE THEY ALL EXECUTIVES
AND GOING TO THE DISASTER SITE
AN INCONVENIENCE ?

IS IT JUST DOLLARS AT A LATER DATE
OR HELP AS SOON AS POSSIBLE ?

was done from New York City…
New Jersey was an obvious ’suburb’.
I’m always amazed how HUGE stars in old movies
mention NJ cities & towns as if everyone knows them !
AND there are music stars of yesterday…
from Frank Sinatra & the 4 SEASONS
to Springsteen & Bon Jovi !
(all indelibly identified as New Jersey people)

BUT TODAY ?

The SOPRANOS, JERSEY SHORE,
JERSY-LICOUS, mtv BEACH HOUSE,
the new HBO series about prohibition
and the ATLANTIC CITY BOARDWALK !!!
(a Sopranos-clone?)

HELL, EVEN ‘MISS CONGENIALITY’ WAS FROM NJ !

The cites & states of most shows are probably given,
but aren’t ‘driven home’ , most are pretty generic.

BUT IF IT’S NEW JERSEY.. YOU KNOW IT !
(and probably can’t help tuning in)

EVEN IF IT’S JUST TO GAPE AT THE OVER-THE-TOP

US SAVINGS BONDS…

Even though they became a ‘bad’ investment years ago,
I stuck with the payroll savings plan at work…
I was given advice decades ago when I started
to put in the minimum amount, & increased it by
a few dollars everytime a ’small’ raise came my way…
Probably over 10 years ago, I was going to stop
getting savings bonds from payroll deduction
(never saw the money, never missed it),
and I got more advice… STAY WITH THE BONDS !
You’ll be retired one day & need an extra hundred or 2
every other month or so…
YOU’LL HAVE A BOND TO CASH IN !
(sounded good to me)

SO AFTER ALL THESE YEARS…
The PAYROLL DEDUCTION SAVINGS BOND
is being done away with… IT’S NO MORE !

I can’t see it being a bad deal for the gov’t.
They pay ’shitty’ interest & people keep bonds forever
(even after they stop getting interest).

You can still get bonds…
but as electronic entries rather than paper !
IT SOUNDS GOOD IN THEORY…
BUT…
Do they really think that people will go the ‘extra mile’,
and take the extra steps it takes (just to figure it out) ?
I’ve gotten a communication or 2 advising me
to set up a Treasury Account for bonds.
They sent me links that need ’snaking’ thru…
asking ME to find MY bank routing number…
(do I really want to put that info out there?)

I COULD FIGURE IT OUT OF COURSE…
BUT WHY BOTHER ?
And why will the ‘less’ computer literate
even attempt to set up an account for a bad investment ?

IT USED TO BE ‘EASY-PEAZY’

AND NOW IT’S LIKE AVRIL LAVIGNE SANG…

SOMEONE WILL PROBABLY BE GETTING
A MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR ADVERTISING CONTRACT
TO GET BOND INVESTMENT BACK
AFTER 80-90% OF FORMER PAYROLL DEDUCTEES
EITHER SPEND IT, OR FIND ALTERNATIVE INVESTMENTS !

never really see the money,
& get back ‘decent’ when needed)

I saw this story on the tv news…
some kid blew his nose off
(they repaired the damage with several operations)
doing ‘fire magic’ that he saw on YOUTUBE !

For some reason, the point of the story
was to point the finger at the ‘evil’ Youtube…
and then suggest you might monitor your kid’s ‘history’
and his use of the computer to save them from computer evils…

WELL THAT LAST PART GOES WITHOUT SAYING…
IT’S CALLED ‘PARENTING’ !!!

But if your kid is THAT stupid,
perhaps you should keep him away
from ALL computers (and life) !!!

I happened to ‘catch’ a medical tv (info?)-mercial
touting the benefits of this massage pad-sized
bank of blinking lights !!!  (only 3 payments of $40)
JUST THINK, $120 AND ALL YOUR PAINS GO AWAY !
This one woman was in a chair for 20 years,
after a few short sessions with the ‘blinking lights’
she was pain-free enough to want to go dancing !

The FDA is used as support for ‘light therapy’
(not sure if they meant this kind),
but the commercial is comical in what they DO ‘promise’(?).
OR IS IT ONE OF THOSE DEALS WHERE
THEY OFFICIALLY PROMISE NOTHING…
THERE’S JUST THE IMPLICATION !

There was a long list of the maladies
this device had a chance of relieving…

but the cure for STUPIDITY

was NOT on the list !

THROWBACK made with REAL sugar !!!

Too bad I’ll never get to try it…
sugar is NOT recommended for me..
I’m much better off with the chemical mixture
in the diet version of the soda !

It’s been so many decades since I’ve drunk a ‘real’ soda
that when ‘real’ soda hits my tongue
it’s like straight sugar… like syrup !

MY REACTION WAS THE SAME AS THE HOSTS ?
Having never heard it used that way,
we were thinking him an idiot for mis-use of a word !

He’s from Texas… people in snow areas
usually think a toboggan is a flat sled-like device,
with no bottom rails, for use in ’sledding’.

NOT IN TEXAS !!!

He was adamant that what’s generally known
as a ski cap around here is a toboggan there !

(AND HAD NOT HEARD OF THE SLED VERSION)


WHICH BRINGS ME TO SODA…

A southern expression I’ve heard used for soda?
If they ask you what you’ll have to drink…
you say… ” I’LL HAVE A COKE “
or ask you…
” WOULD YOU LIKE A COKE ? “

and they’ll follow that up with…

” WHAT KIND? “

(as in Doctor Pepper, 7-UP, ginger ale, etc)

EVERY SODA IS A COKE !!!

I never had a problem…

I DON’T DRINK, or order, COKE !!!
