I’m getting too old for these ‘eating’ holidays !
The holiday meal was great as always…
but the family went a little light on the desserts…
But I guess I ate plenty…
it took a long time for the leftovers to look good to me…
and dive-in for a 2nd meal that coudn’t be beat !

I think I’m going to get right to work now…

Back when I had my season hockey tickets
for the NY Rangers… (I lived nearby in Rutherford, NJ)
the ‘BIG WHISTLE’ was our guy !!!
Very colorful, very emotional, and known to broadcast
after having a few…  He had a good life !

NHL icon Bill Chadwick dies at 94

Bill “The Big Whistle” Chadwick,
the first U.S.-born official in NHL history
and was later a popular broadcaster for the New York Rangers.

For 16 seasons, from 1939 to 1955, despite being blind in one eye,
Chadwick was one of the best officials the NHL.
He invented and perfected the system of hand signals
to signify penalties, the system is now used throughout the world.

He also excelled at baseball, winning the city championship
in 1933 and playing at various times against future
major leaguers Phil Rizzuto and Sid Gordon.

In March of 1937, Chadwick was at the Garden watching the Rovers
in pregame warmups. He was paged over the public address system
and asked to report to the timekeeper’s bench. The scheduled referee,
Ray Levia, was stuck in a snowstorm, and Tommy Lockhart,
the Garden’s amateur hockey boss, asked Bill to referee the game.

“Where’s the whistle?” Chadwick said.

Chadwick soon caught the attention of NHL president Frank Calder,
In 1939, Calder asked Chadwick to join the NHL as a linesman.
He accepted and became the NHL’s first U.S.-born official,
working his first game, the Montreal Canadiens vs the NY Americans.
A year later, he was promoted to referee.

In 1965, at the urging of Emile Francis, the Rangers’ longtime general
manager & coach, Chadwick embarked on a 14-year broadcasting career,
working first on radio with play by play man Marv Albert,
and most notably, on television with Jim Gordon for nine seasons !
(when I had a cast on my leg, I got to ride the elevator with Marv Albert)

Arthur Friedman, the Rangers’ longtime statistician,
dubbed Chadwick “The Big Whistle” in 1969, and the nickname stuck.

“That nickname made me a celebrity,” Chadwick recalled.

As a referee, Chadwick worked more than 900 regular-season games,
plus a record 42 Stanley Cup finals games,
including 13 games in which the Cup was decided.

In 1964, Chadwick was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame,
only the 5th official, the first American-born official, to be so honored.
In 1974, he was inducted into the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame.
In 1975, he won the Lester Patrick Award
for outstanding service to hockey in the US.

HOLIDAY  DIET  ADS  ???

I’m see-ing repeated ads for supplements,
shakes, cookies, etc for dieting purposes…
now that the ‘eating’ holidays are approaching.
The companies claim that by the addition of their product
(and less of other crap and added excercise),
YOU CAN LOSE WEIGHT !!!

The ‘PRODUCTS’ are supposed to give you
that ‘full’ feeling, an appeasement to your appetite.

DUH…
I know that I over-eat
(especially during holidays with ’special’ foods),
not because I don’t feel sated,
I EAT BECAUSE I LIKE TO EAT !!!
NOT BECAUSE I’M HUNGRY !!!

and there ain’t nuthin’ (not even a full belly)
but MY OWN willpower
that will make me push away from the table…

As a matter of fact…
Holdiday eating LEADS TO after-holiday dieting !!!
YOU GO CRAZY FOR A WEEK?
YOU WATCH YOUR INTAKE FOR A FEW MORE !!!

Schools shun Kindle,
saying blind can’t use it !!!
(hard time finding it in a cluttered room too)

Amazon’s Kindle can read books aloud, but if you’re blind
it can be difficult to turn that function on without help.
(BUT IT DOES READ TEXT ALOUD)
Now 2 universities will shun the device until changes are made.
They won’t consider big rollouts of the electronic reading device
unless Amazon makes it more accessible to visually impaired students.

Aren’t standard textbooks.. the expensive ones,
also a problem for the blind ?
and separate audio books, or braille books, fill the need ?

The KINDLE problem IS being addressed by AMAZON…
ADD 3 BUTTONS…
READ ALOUD, TURN PAGE, NEXT CHAPTER
(a sale is a sale)
BUT WHY DENY THE TECHNOLOGY TO SIGHTED STUDENTS ?
Seems like a bit of reverse discrimination !

I’m wondering if the problem isn’t financial ?
I’ve had expensive textbooks written by the same professor
who was teaching the course…
and a semester later, the book is changed, & not re-sell-able !
(royalties? kickbacks? stipends to universities for business?)

THE SCHOOLS MAY NOT HAVE FIGURED OUT HOW TO CASH-IN
ON DOWN-LOAD-ABLE TEXTBOOKS YET !

If there was money to be made…
I’d think they might just endorse the kindle for now,
and accept the promise of ‘blind’ ones later !

the ‘new’ mini-series production of…
THE PRISONER

GOOD ?  BAD ?  DIFFERENT ?
(way different… but good)

I’m writing this first part before the show airs…
base-ing my growing ‘dread’ from…
the commercials & preview video clips online.
AND THIS IS WHAT MY INSTINCTS ARE SAYING !

The video I previewed looked too esoteric,
too serious, and too much a mind-fuck !
The ads might drive viewers away.

The original series was stand-alone, episodic entertainment
that could be enjoyed on more than one level.

AFTER VIEWING ?
I was very entertained by the first 2 episodes,
not as much by the middle 2…
(better if  they condense those middle episodes to an hour)
but I REALLY liked the build-up to an actual ending !

BUT…
If they had called this.. THE ISLAND or LOST 2,
viewers may have noted they had ‘borrowed’
this-and-that from THE PRISONER,
but that’s all…
THIS MINI-SERIES REALLY DOESN’T HAVE THAT MUCH
‘CONNECTION’ WITH THE SERIES IT’S BASED ON…
(not enough anyway)

The original had technology ala JAMES BOND.
The ‘newer one’ touched-on powers ala STAR WARS.
ONE BASED IN BELIEVE-ABLE TECHNOLOGY,
THE OTHER BORDERING ON FANTASY !!!

BUT…
TAKE OUT THE MULTITUDE OF COMMERCIALS,
DO SOME NEEDED EDITING,
& THIS COULD HAVE BEEN BROUGHT IN UNDER 2 HOURS,
AND BEEN A SUCCESSFUL, THEATRICAL RELEASE…

To the faithful,
the original show has risen to mythical proportions…
there was no way to catch ‘lightning-in-a-bottle’ again !
So I can see why the creators of the new show
went in a different direction.

I recently saw a very robust
ANDY GRIFFITH on a Matlock re-run…
and a broken-down, very aged DON KNOTTS
playing the recurring role of a friend & neighbor.

(Andy has used more than a few ‘old’ friends on that show)

DON KNOTTS died in 2006… tributed here in RIP in fact…
(Andy is still going strong)
but I was curious to see how great the age difference
was between the 2 of them…

WELL… DON KNOTTS was born in 1924…
and

not the ice cream,
and not the nickname a girlfriend once gave me in bed
(well, not in this case, here)…
but the ‘other’ way I felt the other nite…

I’d been a little down-in-the-dumps the last 2 weeks…
nothing serious, nothing I could put a finger on…
I slept well, work was okay, but food had no taste…
and I was feeling no ‘joy’ in my daily routine…

So late one night I’m looking for something to eat…
(didn’t really have a dinner)
I end up at a local pizza-type restaurant,
ordered, and had to wait…
(I usually call, it was last minute)

While I was waiting, some guy walks in…
probably in his 30’s… very long black hair… cap…
not shabby, but didn’t look dapper…
and extremely quiet… (and polite)…
(I assumed down-on-his-luck, maybe homeless?)

The very italian guys behind the counter
were very happy to see him…
called out to him… shook his hand…
and the owner comes over to day he’ll make
something special for the guy…
10 minutes later… he comes out with a small pizza box…
loaded with slices ’slathered’ with meat (& whatever)…
I only got to see what was in the box
because another counter guy opened it to add more…
THEY SAY THEIR GOOD-BYES…
THE GUY LEAVES (no charge)…
but not before they tell him to make sure to come back !

I WOULD HAVE SLIPPED HIM A FEW BUCKS
IF I WAS SURE IT WOULDN’T GO FOR BOOZE (or worse)…
HE KINDA LOOKED LEGIT !!!  (I’ve seen plenty of scams)

and it was a great thing for me to witness,
feeling the way I’ve been feeling,
and as a prelude to the holiday season…

IT WAS NICE… REALLY NICE…
TO KNOW THERE ARE SOME
GOOD PEOPLE OUT THERE
who know how to do the right thing !

AND IT WAS ALSO NICE TO SEE…
a Catholic church hall heralding the arrival of
Santa for a meet & greet…
A few years back, there was a local priest who, at mass,
told small kids there was no Santa,
and that the holiday was about JESUS !!!
TRUE TO HIM, BUT LEAVE THE KIDS OUT OF IT PLEASE !
(he ended up being re-assigned & not for pedophilia THIS TIME)

I’M FEELING BETTER NOW…
You don’t always get what you want,
but you just might find, you get ‘what you need’…
GOD BLESS US ALL, EVERY ONE !
