Sharing this … Darrell “Shifty” Powers,
101st Airborne … Band of Brothers

PAYING TRIBUTE TO  REAL  AMERICAN HEROES:

There were no tributes at the Staples Center -
but we can share and launch our own internet tribute!

Shifty volunteered for the airborne in WWII and served
with Easy Company of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment,
part of the 101st Airborne Infantry. If you’ve seen “Band of Brothers”
on HBO or the History Channel, you know Shifty.
His character appears in all 10 episodes,
and Shifty himself is interviewed in several of them.

I met Shifty in the Philadelphia airport several years ago.
I didn’t know who he was at the time. I just saw an elderly gentleman
having trouble reading his ticket. I offered to help,
assured him it was the right gate, & noticed the “Screaming Eagle”,
the symbol of the 101st Airborne, on his hat. Making conversation,
I asked him if he’d been in the 101st Airborne or if his son was serving.
He said quietly that he had been in the 101st. I thanked him for his service,
then asked him when he served, and how many jumps he made.
Quietly and humbly, he said “Well, I guess I signed up in 1941 or so,
and was in until sometime in 1945″ … at which point my heart skipped.

At that point, again, very humbly, he said
“I made the five training jumps at Toccoa, & then jumped into Normandy …
do you know where Normandy is?” At this point my heart stopped.
I told him yes, I know exactly where Normandy was,
and I know what D-Day was.

At that point he said “I also made a second jump into Holland, into Arnhem.”
I was standing with a genuine war hero … and then I realized that it was June,
just after the anniversary of D-Day. I asked Shifty if he was on his way back
from France and he said “Yes. And it’s real sad because these days so few
of the guys are left, and those that are, lots of them can’t make the trip.”
My heart was in my throat and I didn’t know what to say.

I helped Shifty get onto the plane & then realized he was back in Coach,
while I was in First Class. I sent the flight attendant back to get him
and said that I wanted to switch seats. When Shifty came forward,
I got up out of the seat and told him I wanted him to have it,
that I’d take his in coach. He said “No, son, you enjoy that seat.
Just knowing that there are still some who remember what we did
and still care is enough to make an old man very happy.”
His eyes were filling up as he said it.
And mine are brimming up now as I write this.

Shifty died on June 17
after fighting cancer.

There was no parade.
No big event in Staples Center.
No wall to wall, back to back, 24×7 news coverage.
No weeping fans on television.

Let’s give Shifty his own Memorial Service,
online, in our own quiet way.

Please pass this along to everyone you know …
especially to the veterans.

Rest in peace, Shifty.

I really hate being ‘played’…

A POLITICAL FAIRY TALE…
(fiction?)

A very ineffective governor… we’ll call him ‘D’…
is being trounced in the polls by the other party candidate…
we’ll call him ‘R’…
Of course, they both suck… but the incumbent has proved it !

Out of nowhere comes the independant candidate… ‘ I ‘
This candidate says all the right things,
but has a snowball’s chance in hell of winning…
HE CAN ONLY BE A SPOILER !!!

And, with his entry, the poll trouncing has evaporated,
and it’s pretty much a horse race !
His support is coming from the anti-D people,
who see the alternative, ‘R’, as just as bad…
You CAN make a statement with your vote..?
but you end up with the current REALLY bad governor
getting another shot at being bad for the people !
(country’s highest taxes & among the worst in employment)
BUT GREAT FOR HIS BUSINESS BUDDIES !

WITH THE ADDITION OF 2 PRESIDENTS
COMING TO URBAN NEIGHBORHOODS TO STUMP…
HOW COULD THE INCUMBENT LOSE ?
THEM’S THE BIG GUNS !!!
Your candidate must be a real scumpbag
if he needs THAT kind of help !!!

I ADMIT I WAS FOOLED…
The same major newspaper that endorsed the independant, ‘ I ‘,
has always been a bastion of the ‘D’ party !
So ensconced with the ‘D’ party…
that when one of the ‘D’ died shortly after being indicted
in a federal sweep that netted 40 political criminals,
THEY GAVE HIM A WRITE-UP AS GOOD AS THE ONE
THEY GAVE MOTHER TERESA (barely mentioning the crime) !
((and on the FRONT PAGE…. not the EDITORIAL PAGE))

BUT NOW IT MAKES SENSE…
By endorsing the  ‘ I ‘ candidate… the newspaper is a ‘king maker’…
They are helping to manipulate the voters into voting
in a manner that takes the lead away from the guy
who would have clearly beaten the shitty governor in office now !!!
AND GETTING THEIR OWN AGENDA ,
WITHOUT EVEN ENDORSING THEIR CANDIDATE !!!

OH.. AND WOULDN’T IT BE A BIG SURPRISE IF…
THE ‘ I ‘ CANDIDATE GETS TAKEN-CARE-OF
BY THE ‘D’ CANDIDATE WITH SOME CUSHY
POLITICAL APPOINTMENT AFTER RE-ELECTION !!!
WHAT A MESS !!!


OF COURSE… THIS IS JUST A FAIRY TALE !!!
IT COULD NEVER HAPPEN IN THE GOOD OLD USA !!!
(NJ politicians could give the Mafia lessons)

ADDENDUM…
Seems the voters were too smart to be fooled…
The FAIRY TALE has a happy ending…
and the ‘manipulations’ were ineffective…
There’s still a potential ’sleaze’ in office,
but the last guy proved he was,
this one can still do the right thing……

I was bragging to someone about THE PERFECT…
(my morning shower is the best part of my day lately)
and how next time.. i’ll buy a more expensive model
that’s ALL metal.. instead of a plastic head with metal connector…

AND I WAS TOLD PLASTIC IS BETTER…
THE REASONING ?

I have no proof but was told that bacteria,
and other un-healhty stuff,
’stick’ better to metal… so go with plastic !
In addition… it’s easier to keep clean…
AND IT WORKS GREAT & IS CHEAPER !!!
By buying the $18.95 one,
as opposed to the $39.95 one…
YOU’D BE MORE LIKELY TO REPLACE IT ON A WHIM
THAN YOU WOULD IF IT HAD COST MORE MONEY !
(I would, I’d keep it the extra year or 2)

LAST CUT OF THE YEAR…
(trim, trim, trim that bush)

I was off work on friday… figured it a good time
to cut the lawn one final time for the year…
Wanting to leave the gas tank empty for the winter…
I put in what I thought was minimal gasoline.
(a little goes a long way it turns out)
I was finished.. and had to tie the throttle to keep it on…
and let the mower run to use up the gas…

IT RAN FOR A GOOD HOUR !!!

But I got some good use from it…
That morning my neighbor’s wife…
(at home, she’s the phone contact for his business)
Used their, very loud, LEAF BLOWER…
about 7:30am IN THE MORNING !!!

Not having to get up for work… I slept in…
AWAKENED by the racket of the blower !!!

So later… I parked the VERY LOUD lawn mower
on the edge of my property, near their house…
(while I did other yard work)

I WAS HOPING FOR HER TO COME OUT
AND COMPLAIN ABOUT THE NOISE…
and give ME the opportunity to be a wise guy,
and say…
“Sorry about the noise, I know what you mean,
there was some idiot, a-hole, out leaf-blowing
before 8am and woke me out of bed !!! ”

PERHAPS SHE REALIZED IT WAS PAYBACK,
AND JUST ‘STEWED’ IN SILENCE…
Well, not silence…
I was probably called a few choice names !!!
But I’ve heard it before…
I USED TO RIDE THE SCHOOL BUS !!!
