WELL HERE WE ARE…
10 years in the bag…
this being the first issue of the 11th year !!!

To remind everyone of the evolutution of
RIP Renfield (the title)…
I’ve had the RENFIELD nickname for decades,
I was Renfield before there was an internet !

For unique, & domain name, purposes…
I needed a ‘hook’ to separate me from all the pretenders.
Renfield in literature (DRACULA) was already taken…

and although I’m not ‘goth’… or ‘dark’, per se…
it opened great (and popular) areas for merchandising…
and the ‘dead’ tribute being a nice way to start off issues…
it gives a sort of identity and continuity…

But, over the years… I look at the ‘editorial’ aspect of
RIP Renfield (.com)
I rant, I rave, I joke & laugh with you…
SO I CAN GET IT OUT OF MY SYSTEM !!!
(you’ve noticed I don’t run out of things to say, haven’t you?)
With IT out of MY system… it allows me to ‘rest-in-peace’…
RIP is therepeutic for me… I get to file away my thoughts,
always there if I need them (I never do)…
and it keeps the voices in my head at bay !!!

Plus, when I put it in writing….
my bullshit is in a more acceptable form for the masses…
(I’m the guy that never shuts up)
Even from my ‘limited’ contact (email only) with
the RON & FEZ XM-SIRIUS SATELLITE RADIO SHOW…
(I saved my mentions from material submitted.. dozens of them)
RON WAS ABLE TO SIZE ME UP (and bust my balls)
by him telling his partner (on-air & condescendingly) that…
” Oh Renfield, he has LOTS of opinions !!! “

but I went on a rant about CNN fair-play
concerning political adultery…

the OBAMA…er… make that…

the RENFIELD HEALTH PLAN

Tuition for higher education has turned into
a millstone around the necks of the newly graduated.
Imagine… haven’t worked a day and owing a massive debt !
$60 – 150,000 BEFORE you get started at entry level !!!

My PLAN wouldn’t cover EVERY degree…
(case by case, degree by degree, basis perhaps?)
but it would make sense to start with some professional degrees.
There is an opportunity for our ’smartest’ (or grade achievers)
to enter a win-win situation with a gov’t medical plan !

If  you remember the classic, thoughtful tv series…
NORTHERN EXPOSURE
( see my alternate final episode and xmas story,
under fan fiction at…  http://www.retroweb.com/nexp.html )
The small Alaskan town paid for the education of a doctor
in exchange for him serving their needs for 5 years.
IT’S TIME WE USE THAT IDEA FOR THE BENEFIT
OF THE COUNTRY AND THE PEOPLE !!!

I’m aware there is a drop-out rate to be considered…
but those could be liable for paying back the money
in they can’t pay it back in ‘trade’.
For the rest, who actually become doctors (or dentists)…
(if they accept the deal)
they would pay back the debt with their doctoring skills !
(sliding scale depending on ‘choice’ positions)
I’m thinking the new doctors work within the plan,
whether in private practice or clinics,
for 2 days per week until the debt it paid off.
An amount per day, or number of days, to be determined later.
Giving the doctor the choice of working the other 3,
or just 2 with one day for golf…

A SET FEE FOR APPOINTMENTS WOULD HELP
COVER THE COST OF THE PROGRAM…
($10 – $25 should be sufficient, it’s not to MAKE money)
and it could be started in the poorer, more needy areas,
and expanded to all over 10 years or so…

This way the doctor could build up his private practice,
make more than a living wage,
have the gov’t cover 2 days of malpractice  insurance,
and give back something worth more than the money…
COMMUNITY SERVICE !!!

It wouldn’t be a ‘life sentence’…
and when done, the doctor can do as he pleases !

A FEW ADD-ONS ?

Some students, with the grades, can’t get into
the few precious spots in medical schools…
Give the qualified ones who are willing to give-back
preferential, priority placement !

ADDITIONALLY…
If you are a medical person coming to the USA from the outside,
and wish to practice here…
Community service, give-back, should be part of the deal
for getting certification to practice in the USA…

I DON’T SEE ANY OF THIS AS PUNISHMENT…
BUT A SMARTER WAY TO TAKE ADVANTAGE
OF THE RESOURCES WE CURRENTLY HAVE !!!

The benefit to taxpayers would be massive,
the cost to taxpayers would be considably less
than any other plan under consideration…
(but with the gov’t in charge.. it’ll cost plenty anyway)

and we’d have afford-able health care for the poor,
and status quo for the people fortunate enough
to be able to afford a private plan of their own…

ANOTHER PROBLEM SOLVED,
and it didn’t take decades of thought,
and billions of dollars for studies !!!

to willing females who so far aren’t claiming harassment,
and it wasn’t a condition of employment…
and they went away happy…
it seems it’s a matter for his partner, wife, whatever…
to come to terms with…

Actually, the woman he’s married to
is the same one he not only lived with…
but worked with as a writing partner for years…

Probably one of the 2 or 3 best places
for ‘hooking-up’ with a member of the opposite sex
is the workplace… (you see them constantly)
and whether it’s leading somewhere or a fling…
it’s up to the (unelected) adults to figure out !
Unless someone is screaming harassment or rape,
WHAT’S THE BIG DEAL ?

If some sort of intelligent life were to exist there,
more likely on the ‘friendlier’ side facing away,
they might be ‘warmed’ by Jupiter,
but never know of it’s existence,
not being able to travel to the ‘deadlier’ side…
(like being on the dark side of the moon, facing away from earth)

when someone used the expression
‘jet black’
THEY WONDERED WHERE IT CAME FROM ?
The best answer was that it referred to the black exhaust
generated by the powerful jet engines…

NOPE…
TURNS OUT THERE IS A STONE(?) CALLED ‘JET’…
Jet is a form of fossilized wood similar to coal, but harder.
AND IN COLOR ?    IT’S ‘JET’ BLACK !!!

I’m always amazed how I can go thru life
using a common expression, understood by all…
and in this case… going a lifetime thinking it had to do
with an aircraft, while it had nothing to do with one !!!

ROCK SONGS — probably hard to find the original bad releases
of famous artists with all the ‘warts’ on them…
re-mastering now?  it had to be done decades ago for some…
like BILLY JOEL… DON’T ASK ME WHY ? —
it still ‘catches’ in my ear from long ago hearing
the original vinyl version where he mispronounces
ASK  as…  AXSK…  DON’T AXSK ME WHY ?

or the MAMAS & THE PAPPAS cuts where…
(especially heard in headphones)…
You’d hear the music intro of say.. CREEQUE ALLEY…
and right before their voices cut in…
you hear the click of the tape player by the audio guy
where the pre-recorded voices were dubbed into the track…

The new Beatles reissues left ALL of the studio sound intact …
even if it WAS a squeaky chair … in fact, you’ll hear  these “warts”
even clearer now on the remastered versions of their  catalog.
They took out the “objectionable” noise and clutter …
cleaned  up some hiss and “drop-outs” …
but left the integrity of the music as it was
>  but honestly couldn’t even tell you if I OWN  headphones today …

FROM ME…
I still use headphones… it’s an easy way to be ‘alone’…

When a young relative (the bastard) walked off with
my OLD (favorite) Sony headphones (irreplace-able).. I spent more than
I should have on a really good pair of Sennheiser Studio ‘cans’…
more highs than lows… but you hear it all… and too good to leave
laying around for daily use (or light-fingered relatives)…
maybe a little too confining on the head…
(it’s an acquired ‘comfort’ and kinda worth it)…
otherwise I use the ‘better’ Sony collapsibles for outside the house..
no complaints with those either
(except for one ear ‘going out’ a few times a year)…
to save wear and tear on your ipod headphones,
run the wire INSIDE your shirt…
you don’t ‘catch-it’ on anything that way…
