I read some commentary about
THE SUMMER THAT NEVER WAS…
(this past one)

and the writer made a good point…
perhaps it wasn’t just the hot weather
(that took a long time to get here)
perhaps it was more an attitude…
with the economy the way it was…
and not alot of F-U money available…
the carefree-ness of summer never happened !

THE HEAVY BURDEN OF UNCERTAINTY

Wernher von Braun

Wernher von Braun was a German American rocket physicist
and astronautics engineer, becoming one of the leading figures
in the development of rocket technology in Germany & the USA.
Wernher von Braun is sometimes said to be
the preeminent rocket engineer of the 20th century.

He worked on the American intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM)
program before joining NASA, where he served as director of
NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center and the chief architect of the
Saturn V launch vehicle, the superbooster that propelled the
Apollo spacecraft to the Moon. In the words of NASA,
he is “without doubt, the greatest rocket scientist in history.
His crowning achievement  was to lead the development of the
Saturn V booster rocket that helped land the first men on the Moon.
He received the 1975 National Medal of Science.

I read last week some ‘underling’,

I have to replace a t-shirt

LIGHT ON MY FEET ?

I’m getting too old to be careless and fall down.
Walking an unfamiliar sidewalk, distracted,
the toe of my shoe ‘caught’ some VERY ‘raised’ concrete !
There was NO recovery, I was going DOWN !!!

(and NO.. pink shirt didn’t push, or trip, me)

The interesting part of all this is the ‘hang time’…
The entire episode couldn’t have taken more than 1/2 a second,
but my mind was able to size up the situation,
make a plan to minimize the ‘hurt’…
AND THEN IMPLEMENT IT !!!
(it seems like I had plenty of time on the way down)

THE PLAN ?
I was able to ’steer’ myself to the left, onto the grass…
I did a full frontal slap of the grassy ground…
ON CONCRETE, IT COULD HAVE BEEN DISASTROUS !

END RESULT ?
A slight strain in my left foot,
and some pulled muscles(?) on my left side, stomach area.
(and some residual soreness from the ‘rattling’)

I STAYED HOME FROM WORK,
but I’m thinking the one day home will put me
back to 100% for the next work day…

I  WAS  LUCKY  !!!

Ever notice how on broadcast tv…
(nbc, abc, cbs, even fox)
how they, with impunity, use SOME ‘cuss’(?) words
in show dialog that was never allowed before ?

BUT IT’S NOT AS FREE-WHEELING AS YOU THINK…
THERE ARE RULES…

You will hear… ” WHAT AN ASS HE IS ! “

but you will NEVER hear….
” NICE ASS “   or   ” MY ASS HURTS “

IT’S A MATTER OF USAGE…

but by that same rule…
WHY DON’T THEY ‘ADOPT’ THE USE OF ‘SHIT’ ?
(southpark is a cable show, the network version was sterilized)

AMC showed a fictional(?) bio-pic(?) type movie
with sniglets (<–remember THAT word)
from childhood to the first successful USA satellite launch.
(after Sputnik)
A movie never shown by them before & unfamiliar to me.

Perhaps propaganda wise they spun it for people
with WW2 still fresh in their memories…
Von Braun was a scientist, reluctantly forced to work for the Nazi’s,
his life depending on his contribution to Germany’s war effort.
Post-war, looking to defect to the americans…
the caricatured army officers want him tried as a war criminal…
until wiser heads decide to take advantage of his brilliance…

His main foil, and the one basically put in charge of him,
lost a wife & baby in a London bombing,
and blamed von Braun for that thru-out the movie…

VON BRAUN FOR HIS ROCKETRY SUCCESS,
WAS A WAR CRIMINAL !!!

The movie didn’t make sense on alot of levels…
but the one that kept running thru my mind was…

IF YOU’RE ON THE WINNING SIDE,
YOU’RE NOT A WAR CRIMINAL ?
(not pre-viet nam anyway)

OPPENHEIMER & TELLER
(on our side)
had a little to do with the atomic bombs
that killed a few civilians.. men, women, & children too…

WHY WEREN’T THEY LAMBASTED AS WAR CRIMINALS ?
(they would have if Japan got their hands on them)
THEY WERE PATRIOTS !!!

It would have made an interesting counter-point to the movie…
if they had included that argument…
but it was a different time.. and war weary & frightened americans
didn’t need to have that put on-their-plates !!!

THE MOVIE PROBABLY DID ALOT OF GOOD
FOR THE WAY AMERICANS SAW von BRAUN…
(better to have him on OUR side, than executed)

Interesting movie…
if just for it’s historical value or cinematical historical value…
whether accurate or not… you saw what they ‘fed’ the public !

BY THE WAY…
The first successful USA satellite
took 1 hour 54 minutes to circle the earth !!!

With my wife home full-time now…
It was only a matter of time till her attention turned to our 5 cats !!!
It REALLY is too many, and hard to keep a clean house…
The old-timers were safe (one is going to Colorado)…
but the youngest one… the 2 year old ?
SHE WAS THE ONE !!!
(leaving us with 3 still)
My daughter used to bring home the ‘cute’ kittens…
and now that she and the animals are older…
the cat that needs it most, isn’t getting the attention…

I took months to find a home for it…
NO LUCK
Instead it went to the local animal shelter…
(the shelter only 2 years old and still caring too much)
I’m very confident the cat will be adopted quickly
and asked to be informed when it was…
(lie to me, lie to me)
They don’t euthanize healthy, social animals…
They actually put them on display at the local PET SMART
animal super-store on saturdays for adoption…
and have great success placing animals…
SO IT’S ALL GOOD !

The sucky part ?
I NEVER wanted cats in the first place
(we’ve had them for over a decade)
and who gets to take the cat to the shelter ?
ME !!!   THE ONE WITH THE HEART !!!
(I’ll be fine, but I think I’ll be upset over this for awhile)

this purports to be the ACTUAL SIZED view of the planet Jupiter,
not the pinpoint I’ve been able to find in the sky on occasion…
but this mammouth ‘10-15%’ of the moon-sized orb in the sky !!!

The view of the planet is NOT a close-up,
but an ‘un-retouched’ (or re-sized) night-time view !!!

IS THIS FOR REAL ?

I phoned my doctor for a prescription or 2
to be mailed to me (if he was okay with that).
My next appointment isn’t until December.

The day I receive the prescriptions in the mail
(they took their sweet old time, nearly a week),
my email box has a spam ad for prescription medication,
naming the drugs I WILL be getting when I take them
to the drug store in 3 days !!!

THEY DIDN’T GET THE INFO FROM ME, OR MY COMPUTER !
I’m thinking that the doctor’s office enters them into a database,
the database connects them to my email address,
and the database people sell the info to drug spammers !

I RARELY GET DRUG SPAMS, IF AT ALL…
If the spam mails came AFTER I filled the prescriptions,
that I could understand !
THE TIMING IS VERY SUSPECT !!!

I had a rushed weekend last week…
but some real quality sleep saturday nite…
IT WAS GLORIOUS !!!

Amazing how the best sleep I’ve ever gotten,
no matter how sound or solid or comfortable other times,
is between the hours of 7 and 9 in the morning !

A REAL SHAME I HAVE TO GET UP FOR WORK AT 6am !!!

The ‘refresh’, the vivid dreams, the comfortability with my ‘blankey’…
I’LL LIST IT AS ONE OF THOSE ULTIMATE TIMES
YOU CAN’T MAKE HAPPEN, THEY JUST DO !!!
