A vacation project for me…
(during this hot spell)

I FOUND THE NOT-SEEN-FOR-A-LONG-TIME DISKS
THAT CONTAINED THE RIP Renfield Issues
that went all the way back to the beginning… ISSUE #1 !!!

and yes, there’s been quite an improvement over the years !

I consolidated them into one big folder,
from one to 5 hundred and eleven…
and saved them multiple times on different computers,
and all those external hard drives & flash drives
I always seem to be buying…

I took a look at some really early stuff..
(looking for nude girl pics I could re-use)
and WOW…

I REALLY USED TO PISS PEOPLE OFF !!!
I forget the days when people would call me all kinds
of un-kind & untrue names because they couldn’t take a joke !!!
(or enjoy one)
and then I’d print them, laugh at them,
and point out their own stupid, narrow minded-ness !
Hmmm.. maybe that’s why I don’t get
un-subscribers very often anymore !!!

HAVE I MELLOWED THAT MUCH ?
OR ARE THE DUMMIES COMING AROUND
TO SENSIBLE THINKING AS THEY GET OLDER ?

I’LL TELL YOU A SECRET… Shhhh…
If I didn’t purposely kick people in the sides occasionally…
I’D NEVER GET ANY RESPONSE IN MY EMAIL BOX !!!
If they didn’t notice, that’s the key element in radio talk shows…
if the hosts didn’t always disagre,e or throw out explosive comments,
the angry listeners wouldn’t call in to create show content !!!

HEALTHCARE FOR ALL ?

WE’RE DOOMED !!!
(find your resting place quickly)

(RIP as budget restraints & bureaucrats make usual decisions)
((maybe not initially, but ’slippery-slope’ comes to mind))

I wasn’t aware of hospitals turning people away !
I thought the exhorbitant charges for medical procedures
by those with insurance or can afford to pay…
was to offset the ‘freebies’ hospitals & doctors give regularly
for humanitarian (and legal?) reasons…

I luckily get medical coverage thru my employer…
but over the years MY bi-weekly contribution
has increased at regular intervals… (it ain’t cheap)

In addition…
the coverage & deductibles have gone to hell
to keep insurance costs manage-able…

BUT, WE THE EMPLOYED,
TAKE THE HIT WE HAVE NO CHOICE BUT TO AFFORD…
AND JUST BE GLAD THAT WE’LL BE ABLE
TO KEEP OUR HOMES IN CASE OF
CATASTROPHIC MEDICAL COSTS !!!
(costs can cripple you, but not wipe you out, so we pay)

MY FEAR OF A GOV’T SPONSORED HEALTHPLAN ?
MY costs are never going to go down…
MY benefits are never going to go up…
in fact they’ll probably greatly decrease…
(one way or another, I’ll be paying for someone else)
AND
EVERYBODY KNOWS THAT WHEN THINGS ARE EQUALLED OUT…
THE POOREST WILL NOT RISE TO YOUR CURRENT LEVEL…
BUT RATHER YOUR (paid for) BENEFITS WILL BE DECREASED
TO A MINIMALLY MAINTAINABLE BENEFIT & COST LEVEL…
SO THAT EVERYONE GETS THE SAME !!!

SOUNDS WONDERFUL ?
I’d like to see all elected officials ‘volunteer’ to be the guinea pigs
for the healthcare plan THEY come up with !!!

LET THEIR LOVED ONES END UP
WITH THE MESS THEY CREATE !!!

and  ONLY THEN try it out on the rest of us !!!

THE BASTARDS !!!

WOULDN’T IT BE CHEAPER TO JUST MAKE
THE SAME NEGOTIATED PAYMENTS FOR THOSE IN NEED…
THAT INSURANCE COMPANIES NOW DO ? (PPO, HMO)
without an expensive bureaucracy created
to mis-handle judging payments ?

OR JUST HAND OUT GRANTS TO HOSPITALS

(cut into doctor salaries or work-load and see what you get)

I WAS UNAWARE THAT STREET VENDORS IN NYC
HAD TO PAY (at auction) FOR THE RIGHTS
TO LOCATIONS FOR THEIR HOT DOG WAGONS !!!

AND IF YOU HAVEN’T SEEN THE STORY…
The vendor at the stairs to the MET…
(metropolitan museum of art)
was evicted for being behind on his rent…
behind $300,000 of his monthly $54,000 payments
for the yearly total of…. $643,000 !!!  YIKES !!!

a review of…
THE JOAN RIVERS COMEDY CENTRAL ROAST

They do these once a year and have been raucous,
anything goes affairs that have been great tv !!!
(except for the odd Denis Leary one done by another group)

My first time thru the Joan Rivers Roast
wasn’t as wild or as end-to-end funny as others…
Some ‘roasters’ were fantastic…
some were adequate…
and others had no business there…

My second time thru a few days later…
I was more forgiving (plus I knew where to fast forward)…

This roast really had the feeling that it was a Joan Rivers Production…
that SHE ran the show instead of being THE guest…
the SHE edited the show (not a great job)
(daughter Melissa came out looking great)
that SHE was producer & director…
and it lacked spontaneity, you felt the structure !!!

MORE DONE ‘BY’ HER
INSTEAD OF ‘FOR’ HER !!!
(and some very ‘forced’ video clips from famous friends)

Not counting the Leary disaster…
this was my least favorite of the roasts…
but it’s still provides some good laughs…
AND IS WORTH WATCHING !

Tom Arnold (Barr) was a roaster… (and got roasted)
and got off a few good ones…
like…
(looking away from Joan after calling her a ‘Diva’)

“A diva is what you call a ‘cunt’
when she’s still in the room…”

(the lesser, even unknown, roasters did the best job)

Speaking of stores…
it’s a good thing I can keep the Renfield persona in check
and have some manners, and keep my mouth shut sometimes…

I was in a Home Depot
(a cavernous building-hardware mega-store)
and was buying 1, $3 item…
not wanting to walk to the cash registers
at the OTHER end of the building…
I asked if I could pay at the RETURNS AREA,
nearer to where my car was parked,
instead of walking down and back from the registers…

it was no problem…
and the woman replied (straight-line coming up)…

” I HAVEN’T GONE DOWN (there) IN YEARS !!! “

Not the perfect straight-line…
but I was tempted & automatically
prepared a few smart-aleck replies in my head !!!

AND NO… IT WASN’T A CHILD… OR A GRANDMA…
Just a full-grown woman who doesn’t ‘go down’ anymore !

I heard ANOTHER interesting turn-of-a-phrase
on a cop-type show concerning abilities…

THEY SPOKE OF THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN
WELL-TRAINED
and
GIFTED

As in the way you can study chess
but still lose easily to someone who never studied chess
but has that odd-gene that makes the game crystal clear to them.

Personally, I am train-able for some things…
and had to work hard to look smart as far
as grades in school were concerned…
(something not everyone can do)
BUT
I’ve known people who just soak in knowledge,
who take on an understanding of abstract &-or tangible
concepts with very little effort…
or the ability to put in the effort that succeeds !
AND
I’M JEALOUS AS HELL !!!
It is hell being able to recognize it & not be part of it !!!
I HAVE TO SETTLE !!!

I ORDERED SOME NOSE-GLASSES

and since the shipping was the same…
I also ordered a pair of X-RAY specs…

(woo hoo)

They mistakenly(?) also included these eyeglasses…

Novelty-type ones you’d never use in real life…
but surprisingly… you’re able to see quite well thru them…
(regularly spaced pinholes in a solid lens)
(supposedly ‘cures’ eye strain, concentration, or sight problems)

IT HAS OCCURRED TO ME
THAT THESE MIGHT BE VERY USEFUL
TO ‘LOOK AT’ SOLAR ECLIPSES DIRECTLY !!!
I was always told that it’s a bad idea
to stare (or even look) at an eclipse without taking precautions…
(lack of brightness allows you to stare, bad rays still hitting eyes)

BUT THESE GLASSES MIGHT BE ABLE TO BE
MARKETED AS ECLIPSE-VIEWING-GLASSES !!!
(instead of being used to make you look like a ‘douche’)
They must block 70-80% of the sun’s rays
while allowing your mind to create a ’solid’ picture for your brain !

I’M NOT A MEDICAL GUY…
BUT THERE MIGHT BE MONEY TO BE MADE HERE !!!

OUR GANG – LITTLE RASCAL COMEDY SHORTS

For some reason, Little Rascals came up in work…
I asked.. ” FARINA, boy or girl ? ”
I grew up thinking Farina was a boy…
but thought I was convinced somewhere along the way
that Farina was actually a girl in the shows…
(outfit was long and dress-like… those ties in the hair)

I WAS SHUT DOWN BY SOMEONE WHO INSISTED
FARINA WAS DEFINITELY  BOY !!!
(so I went online to stick it to him with proof)

I FOUND THIS QUESTION & ANSWER…

Friends at work say there was a little black girl
in the Our Gang / Little Rascals comedies. I do not remember her.
Can you tell me if there was a little black girl on the series or not.
If so, what was the character’s name and the actor’s name?

There were occasionally black girls in the Gang,
but also a couple of the black boy characters started off as girls.
When the series began (in 1922), the black boy had a little sister
named Farina, but she was played by a boy named Allen Hoskins.
Over the next couple of years, the character became a boy.
Hoskins’ little sister Jannie joined the Gang for a few years,
playing a character named Mango.  In the talkie era,
when Stymie was the black boy, his little sister, Carlena Beard,
played his little sister in the films a few times.
Eventually, the character Buckwheat was created
for a later little sister to Stymie named Willie Mae Taylor.

Since Buckwheat was patterned after Farina,
the character continued to be a female even after
Billie Thomas took over the role.
Within a couple of years, that character became male.

The PETE SEEGER 90th BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION
an all-star cast did at Madison Square Garden (in may)
has been played a few times on public tv lately…

and it kinda gets you in the mood…

MY WIFE PUT IN HER REQUEST FOR A XMAS GIFT…
(in august)
2 tickets to see ARLO GUTHRIE in November…
(she’s taking my daughter, not me… she wants to have a good time)

IF YOU GO TO TICKET AGENCIES…
good tickets were between $200 & $300 !!!  YIKES !!!
At the New Jersey Performing Arts Center
(more like Carnegie Hall than a hockey arena)
plenty of tickets were still available
and I managed 2 orchestra seats, center, on the aisle,
about 15 rows back, pre-paid parking…
and with the service charge… it came to $190

NOT CHEAP, BUT NOT OUT OF REACH…
and since I’m an actual working person…
WHAT THE HECK !!!

ONE SPECIAL THING I LEFT OUT ?
The show is November 30th.. 3pm
the Sunday after Thanksgiving…
(a nice, relaxed afternoon concert)
and although, Arlo just said in a recent interview
that he’s ‘retiring’ ALICE’S RESTAURANT…
due to the ADDED length from audience glee & applause…
(plus he’s probably tired of it by now)
the 18:24 on the recording, turns to over 30 minutes in concert !

BUT THERE IS NO WAY, THAT CLOSE TO THANKSGIVING,
THAT GUTHRIE COULD POSSIBLY LEAVE
ALICE’S RESTAURANT UN-SUNG !!!

(I would feel cheated & it would reflect in my review of the show)

IT’S A THANKSGIVING SONG & TRADITION
(It would be like Gene Autry skipping
Rudolph, the Red Nosed Reindeer at Xmas time)

I know of people and radio shows that traditionally
include Alice’s Restaurant as part of their holiday
to the chagrin of their kids !!!
